Today’s topic is basic HTML. On the Weekly schedule I mentioned TCP/IP (Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol). TCP controls how packets of information are sent and IP controls the addresses they’re sent to. An IP address is four 8-bit numbers separated by dots, although some are now being converted to characters. (Question: What is La Salle’s Web server IP address?) For more, see description from Yale U.

To try and keep all these languages straight, here's a little history.

Intro to creating Web pages is covered in assigned readings:

  • HTML and CSS Chapters 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 (pp. 94-106 and 120-122 for writing the code), 8 (p. 181), 17.
Here are some links that add to the readings. We’ll look at these in class:
HTML primers:
  • Among many others, these are as good as the next: The html primer and HTML Dog (better, and recommended by the w3fools).
  • Use these tutorials and the text to complete the Handcoded pages assignment.
