ENG 308/COM 402 Feature Writing: Editing 9/3/02

The barbecue story will be due on disk next Tuesday, Sept. 10. Pay attention to extra paragraph returns, real paragraph indents, real quotation marks and apostrophes, real em dashes, spaces after a period, trade marks and brand names, the placement of punctuation within quotes (see Punctuation section at back of AP Stylebook), numerals, addresses, consistency of names, possessives, abbreviations for times, days, years and money, and soundalike words.

The general rule for word abbreviations is that AP abbreviates words (months, street types, states) if they are more than five letters. AP generally uses numerals (e.g. 10) for numbers greater than nine, but uses numerals for things that are counted or measured such as age, dollars, temperature, time, weight, length, depth and height even if they are less than 10.

Feel free to borrow the Stylebook in lab. There is also one in the reference section of the library.

Remember to ask during this week’s class. If you have any remaining questions, mark them in the file or at the end of the file. The important things are for the style to be consistent and for you to at a minimum notice where there might be a correction needed.

Please hand in printed copy as well, double-spaced.
