COM 402/ENG 308 Feature Writing: La Salle Profile 10/15/02

You will soon complete your interview with your Professional Profiles person. Your first draft of the story is due Tuesday, Nov. 5. You should aim for 800–1,000 words. Longer is better.

Remember to use some of the techniques mentioned in class including the use of quotes, the seven forms of description (Show, don’t tell) outlined in Chapter 5 (Cybill Shepherd example), the use of comparisons (similes, metaphors, analogies), use of the five (?) senses, of appropriate feature style or tone, use of repetition considerations of structure including a strong lead (see handouts, Chapter 6) and an end that is some form of a tie-back, (maybe problem-solution structure or dramatic unity but not straight chronology) pacing including paragraph lengths, flow/transitions, and considerations of grammar/fact including wordiness, use of lively verbs and active voice, getting the facts right and including all relevant ones.

Note you have profile stories in Chapter 5 (Cybill Shepherd), 6 (Oseola McCarty) and 7 (Adam and Meagan) as well as the earlier ones on Vivien Thomas and Dorothy Stratten (Chapter 3) . There are some other tips in Chapter 7 in the discussion “The Profile” including the use of a news peg (you might have one e.g. a retirement) key use of details, use of present tense [and note how extensive the quotes and dialog are in the “Adam and Megan” profile story].
