Today’s topics are a last look at typography, and site usability, with an emphasis on navigation.

Here is a summary page of my Top 12 Tips for using type on the Web, and a slide show from Pascal Klein:

Some navigation resources:

  • One way to define what Usability means is to look at the Table of Contents from Jakob Nielsen’s Designing Web Usability. And here is a recent interview with Nielsen.
  • Comparison of 5 types of navigation devices from Grantastic Designs
  • which you can compare to this list of ten devices from jessett.com
  • Here’s a series of examples from Lehigh University (Design- Navigation Examples) that show how navigation is thought through.
  • A rather amazing study of eyetracking on Web pages from the Poynter Institute (journalism-based). Check out the videos (lower right corner).
  • The notoriousWeb Pages That Suck.
  • A U.S. government site on guidelines for usable websites. Note that under Section 508 you have to follow these if your organization gets federal funding.

One way to put it together is in a checklist I made for Site Assessment
