ENG 330

Part 1

September 3

Sept. 10

We’ll go over any problems you had with the process of setting up the space for your Web sites later on, so check the updated guidelines at:
How to set up a site. Be sure you have successfully used telnet to create a public_html directory on the alpha server. Use Filezilla to see if it’s there. Remember that ftp is a protocol (ftp://alpha.lasalle.edu, then File ->Login As). If your alpha password is not working, note that on the sign-in sheet.

Some Internet history and terminology. First, we'll watch this:

History of the Internet from PICOL on Vimeo.
This material is covered in readings assigned for Sept 10: Visual Design for the Modern Web chapter 1, and HTML, XHTML & CSS Introduction, and chapters 1 and 2. Here are some links that add to the readings. We’ll look at these in class:
Web history:

And: An Internet pie chart and How the Web works, from HowStuffWorks. Usenet is easiest to access through Google, clicking on the Groups tab. Finally, in relation to top-level domain names, here is a list of the two-character country codes (top-level domains) that show where .cc, and .tv come from, among others, and here is the registration site for the new .biz TLD Neulevel.biz. Here’s an old article on Web 2.0 from a design perspective that nevertheless is a good summary of what Web 2.0 means, and where the Web is going.
