Redesign Assignment
    9/13/17

Note: Before next Wednesday (9/20) send me URLs for at least two candidates for the Web site you’d like to redesign for your final project. You will start with an existing company and use your site to introduce a new look and image for the company. We should be able to find candidates in the Philadelphia area, so that you can take photos if needed.

We need to go over these next Wednesday. Failure to submit candidates will result in a penalty of 2 points on the final project grade.

This could start with the existing company logo if there is one, and any related color schemes and design constraints, but from there you need to design the site, navigation, etc. Work from what the logo and the existing site seem to be saying. Also, you should get screen shots soon of the opening page and one inside page.

We will add

<meta name="robots" content="noindex,nofollow" />

to ensure our pages don't get crawled. A more detailed procedure is to write a robots.txt file.

Here are examples in need of help that have inspired this assignment:

Society of Design (ironic? note HTML4, not centered); a fancy B&B (note it has an HTML5 doctype).

The cheesesteak battle: Pat's (Geno's is cheesier.)

Earlier I showed this major journalism foundation that is now done in Bootstrap. In this one you can clearly see the Bootstap classes, the MaxCDN (StackPath) link and so on. Also here are recent examples of bad "free" template or CMS sites:

Some other candidates might give you an idea of what you might do, starting with some Bootstrap sites: DogeCoin, Bootstrap (!), Open Text, DSTLD, Anchor & Den (restaurant). And a WordPress site Arbor Collective for the look and feel. Also Greg Smith's developer site (mostly static) and one example of a scrollTo site: KUTX, or this with an almost standard grid (what's it made in?). Take a look at the companies that did these sites— how are they staffed, what are their other clients like, where are they, etc. (do they accept interns ...). Also go under the hood and look for jQuery plug-ins, templates, open the CSS, etc.

Here are the class's candidate sites:

Majeed 1, 2 Lexus 1, 2 Leo 1, 2, 3 Sam 1, 2
William 1, 2 Anthony 1, 2 Johnatan 1, 2, 3 Julia 1, 2
