About the DArt Internship Program
DArt 461/462

Why Intern?
Today's job market is very competitive and with changing technology, it is imperative for even entry-level employees to have experience in order to land a position.
The experience employers expect should be related directly to your field. Internships provide you with field-related experience and the opportunity to put specific accomplishments on your resume.
Internships also help you to decide what you really wish to do when you leave La Salle. An internship in a specific field will help you decide if that type of work is for you. Obviously the sooner you determine what you'd like to do, the sooner you can plan your academic career.
One additional benefit of an internship is the chance to see how your classroom work is applied in a professional setting. One of the reasons you receive credit (and a grade) for DArt 461/462 is because you are expected to make a link between what you learn in class and what you learn in your internship.

What is DArt 461/462?
These courses are the ones for which you sign up in order to receive credit for your internship. Typically, you will register for DArt 461;DArt 462 is for those who have already done one internship for credit. Please note these are real courses. Each class is worth 3 credits. Each class is graded. You must sign up for the course and observe the drop/add guidelines just like any other class.
DArt 461/462 counts as a CORE requirement toward your major. You may only earn 3 total hours of internship/co-op credit toward your major. The other 3 credits would count as a general elective.

How do I qualify for credit?
In order to receive a DArt 461/462 credit, you must
Have a 2.75 GPA
Have your portfolio approved by the DArt Director
Have a schedule, which allows you to work approximately 10-15 hours per week at the internship site.
Students who have questions about whether they qualify may discuss these concerns with the DArt program director. IMPORTANT: You must present the DArt Director with evidence that you meet these requirements before you register for DArt 461/462. If you register for the class without meeting these requirements, you will be asked to drop it. If you do not, you will receive an "F".

If your GPA needs Repair
If your GPA needs repair, or your portfolio is not approved, you may still intern. However, you will not receive college credit for the internship. Bear in mind, also that often labor regulations and union contracts require interns to be receiving compensation for their work (either money or credit.) Many firms will not let you intern if you are not receiving credit.

How Do I find an Internship?
You are encouraged to seek opportunities on your own in pursuit of an internship. Some employers will submit requests for DArt interns. These positions will be posted on the board and via email to all DArt majors.
The DArt director must approve all internship sites. This is to ensure that the experience will be related to your major and that someone in the organization will be assigned to supervise and evaluate your work.
You may register for DArt 461 before you have a site selected.

What do I have to do for a grade?
During your internship, you must

· Keep a journal of your internship experiences;
· Meet every 2 weeks with your internship coordinator;
· Complete a final project which represents the work you have been doing;
· Complete a description of you internship.

In addition, your Supervisor must:
· Complete a mid-semester evaluation of your work;
· Complete a final evaluation.

These assignments may change slightly for the summer interns. Your grade is based on how thoroughly you process the internship experience through journals and meetings, the quality of your final project and the feedback from your internship coordinator.
