The purpose of the site is to show images of and convey information about a personal art collection. The comp from last week's assignment showed only the home page where the user would select a category such as Painting or Sculpture. Subsequent pages would have some kind of thumbnail navigation probably on the left-hand side. And to the right would appear a large image of the selected item with information about the piece below it.
If I am going to place the Art Collection Website page that I am creating for this course into one of the categories of Vincent Flanders and Mike Willis, those being:
then I suppose I would place it in Category 3 (ego). It will provide information about the items in the collection, for example, artist, medium, dimensions, description, and so on. But its main purpose is to "show off" the collection. Of course, its real purpose is not in the list above, I am making it as an academic exercise. Frankly I would not be making this page if I were not in the course.
As a teacher the audience for almost any website I would make would be my students. They will look at my page -- occasionally when they are supposed to be doing something else like performing a lab or listening to a lecture. Some of the artists represented in the collection might come across the site so they should be represented in good light.
While the ego-driven site has the fewest constraints, the site will be displaying art work and as such the focus should be on that. The design should not detract from the works. That probably implies a neutral, subdued color scheme. The navigation should be straightforward. Finally, if I want people to "happen" upon the site, then the text should be searchable.
