Creating a web page

Using Word 2000 to generate a web page. Start Word. Choose File/New (may need to click the doule arrows) and select Web Page.
- Background: Choose Format/Background. Select a color or fill effect. To use your a non-Word graphic as a background, choose Fill effect/Picture/Select Picture.
- Picture: Choose Insert/Picture (from Clip Art of From File).
- Hyperlink: Highlight the words or image you wish to make a hyperlink. Choose Insert Hyperlink, under Browse for: click File.
- Controlling spacing and layout. The best way to control the placement of images and text is to use a table. Go to Table/Insert. Remember that you can make the table border invisible using the Border button on the Tables and Borders toolbar.
- Save: When you save a web document for example with the name home; it creates not only a file home.htm but also a folder home_files. Both are needed to make the web page.
Naming your files. You have to let the computer know which file you intend a viewer to come to first on your web site. You do this by giving that file a special name: home.htm, not freds_home.htm, not home2.htm, just home.htm. Note that our web pages are on the alpha which uses the Unix operating system. Unix is case sensitive, thus your file should NOT be HOME.htm or Home.htm.
If you didn't shoose the name home.htm, change it. For instance, if you are in Explorer, you can right click and choose Rename. Recall that Windows often doesn't show extensions like .htm. If you saved your file as HTML and it has the appropriate icon (part of a wheel for Netscape, a blue 'e' for Internet Explorer) then it has the proper extension. You need only worry about the filename. It must be home.
Another thing about file names: Unix does not like file names with spaces in them, avoid using them in any file you intend to be a part of your web page. (Remember that if you change a file's name, you must also change any hyperlinks you made to it.)
What you have to have.
- Your web site must consist of at least two pages.
- There must be a hyperlink from the first page to the second.
- One of the pages must have a link to some other site.
- You must have a background color, texture or graphic.
- You must have a picture.
Some warnings.
- Your web site should not be offensive.
- Put all of your files in the same place (preferrably a floppy or zip disk). Spreading it over more than one disk will result in confused hyperlinks.
- Switching between Word 2000 and Word 98 will result in confusion. I think one can go from 98 to 2000 but not the other way. (98 makes HTML; 2000 makes XML).
- If you are concerned about privacy: Your web page does not have to be about you. And if you insist, we can remove it after it has been graded.
- Remember to FTP all associated files and folders. Web documents are not like regular Word documents in the following sense: When you insert a picture in a Word document, the picture is really in there. When you insert a picture in a web document, the web documents only refers to a graphics file which remains external. Another thing: It may make a copy of your graphic file and refer to its copy instead of the original.
