Second
Quarter Theology Project
Mr.
Dolan
Assignment of Individual Topics
Everyone will have a different assignment, though much
will be the same for everyone. On the
day that you receive the assignment, you may swap assignments with someone else
in the class. You may not swap
afterward.
Progress Report and Plan
On Monday, December 16, you
will submit a brief statement of what you have accomplished so far. Also, include a proposed schedule for when
you will be completing the next stages of the project. With your name, date, and Theology class
period, this statement and proposal should be typed or neatly written on
loose-leaf paper with uniform edges.
The Project
¨
Each project involves some research connected with the
Bible, Jesus, or the early Church. Some
projects require film viewing. Others
include reading material available online.
Some versions are available at http://bible.gospelcom.net/ and the New
American Bible is available online at http://www.nccbuscc.org/nab/bible/index.htm
¨
The final written
portion of the project is a two to three-page double-spaced, spell-checked,
grammar-checked, proofread paper.
¨
To use the spell-check in Microsoft Word, use the m key or select Spelling
and Grammar… from the Tools
pull-down menu.
¨
To use the grammar-check feature in Microsoft Word,
select Options… from
the Tools
pull-down menu. Then mouse-click on the
Spelling
& Grammar tab. On the Spelling
& Grammar options box, make sure that there is a check in the box
before Check grammar with spelling. Finally, click the on-screen [Ok]
button at the bottom of the Spelling & Grammar options
box. Now you can access the
grammar-check feature with the spell-check.
¨
To use the spell-check in WordPerfect, use the keystroke
combination c + f. To start the Grammatik grammar-check program
in WordPerfect, use the following keystroke combination: a + s + f.
¨ Prepare a typed or handwritten outline before you start to
write. In the end, your essay might not
look like your outline. Nonetheless,
your outline can be a helpful guide.
Submit this preliminary outline with your completed essay.
¨ Once you have completed your good draft of the paper, outline what
you have written. This outline should
help you to see whether your essay says what you want it to say. By looking at the outline, you can better
see whether your essay is clearly organized in a way that makes sense. If your outline shows you that your essay
needs revising, revise the essay accordingly.
¨
Remember that good writing does not come from just one
draft. Instead, write, then rewrite and
revise. Get feedback. Rewrite and revise. When possible, get feedback on your
rewritten paper and rewrite again.
[Here I am using the term “revise” to refer to the kind of basic
corrections that do not greatly restructure your essay. By “rewrite,” I mean the process of
thoroughly redoing parts or all of what you have written.]
¨
Some words not to confuse: were, we’re, and where; it’s and its;
their, there, and they’re. For this formal academic writing assignment, do not use any contractions,
e.g., don’t, can’t, they’re. Do not misspell you as u or your as ur. Misuse or misspelling of any words above
will significantly reduce your grade.
For additional aids, see the style guide online at
http://academic.bowdoin.edu/WritingGuides/writing/html/StyleGuide.shtml
¨
Especially in shorter essays such as you are writing, try
to avoid direct quotations, i.e., quoting word-for-word from a source
text. However, if you must quote
directly, do use quotation marks around the borrowed material.
¨
When paraphrasing (putting things into your own
words), do not look at your source text.
Instead, read the source text enough times that you can use your own
words and not plagiarize (failing to give due credit to your sources).
¨
The essay, your preliminary outline, and
your outline of the completed paper are due on Thursday, December 19. The grade for late papers will be reduced by
10%. No papers will be accepted after
12/20/02.
By Friday, December 13, please have a parent or guardian sign on the line below to confirm awareness of this assignment.
