Research
Interests:
My research interests focus primarily on young children's emotional development, particularly their understanding of emotion in ecologically valid contexts. My projects include work with infants, preschoolers, and their parents, as well as college students. My newest research examines the ability of ethnically diverse children with and without ADHD to understand emotion in play situations. I also have interests in individual differences in family dynamics (e.g., parent-child involvement patterns, adult attachment styles, marital satisfaction) and ethnic differences in the perception and expression of emotion.
Opportunities
for student research involvement:
I welcome involvement from both undergraduate
and graduate students. Research assistants may gain experience with various phases
of the research process (research design, participant recruitment, creating and
editing videotapes to be used in experimental sessions, assistance in conducting
studies with infants and their families, coding, analysis, interpretation, presentation
at professional conferences, and publication). Students in the undergraduate
and M.A. programs may sign up for course credits--a minimum two-semester commitment
of 8-10 hours per week is required. Dissertation students interested in the above
research are also welcome to work with me.
