Other Volunteer Opportunities:

Concerned Black Men, Inc.

Concerned Black Men of Philadelphia, Inc. (CBM), a minority community- based organization, has been working within the African American community for more than two generations. CBM, founded in 1975 by five law enforcement officers, was originally founded to address Philadelphia's violent gang problem. Based on this foundation and tradition, CBM strives to achieve its mission of encouraging youth to be aware and proud of their heritage, maximize education opportunities, and be socially conscious and responsible. Unique to CBM is its approach to affecting change. CBM activities are driven by the articulated needs of the community. CBM members are concerned community residents who participate in the protection and development of our community. This involvement is facilitated by the composition of the Board of Directors, all community residents, and regular CBM- hosted forums where community input is solicited. These activities and programs translate into more than 15,000 community service hours annually.

CBM's Youth Mentoring Program is a new initiative for 2002-03. This initiative will allow CBM to begin school-based mentoring of male and female middle school youth for the first time in our history. The program will combine the mentoring relationships with life/ social skill development and academic support. Our partner schools for the 2002-03 school year are: Ada H.H Lewis, Ivy Leaf, Grover Washington, Jr., and Wagner, potentially serving 160 youth in northwest Philadelphia.

Thus, CBM is in the process of recruiting mentors to participate in its Youth Mentoring Program for 2002-03. Both male and female mentors are needed. Mentors will be screened, trained, and assigned to a young person for cycles of fifteen (15) weeks, with meetings once weekly for a minimum of two hours. This is an opportunity for committed individuals to provide a valuable community service by nurturing, supporting, and modeling for young people at a pivotal juncture in their lives. With a minimum commitment of thirty (30) hours, volunteers will contribute to, and share in, the positive holistic development of an at-risk young person. Interested parties should contact Keith Hendricks, Program Coordinator at (215) 276-2806
