Instructions for Creating a WWW Page using Frames:
- Create a folder to hold all of the materials
- Open Word
- Create a new www page document (File > New> then on
right hand side panel, choose “On My Computer” then on General tab in
dialog box, choose “Web Page” (double clicking will choose and ok;
otherwise, then click ok)
- Save As as a filtered web page in the folder that you
created (File > Save As > ). Use a name of your choice – this
will be what holds the initial content in the right frame.
- I recommend against using single file www page (.mht)
because some browsers cannot display them (including older versions of
Internet Explorer)
- I recommend using all lower case in all file names, with
no blank spaces – to avoid problems with different browsers and to ensure
no confusion about which letters are capitalized in the page names.
- View > Toolbars > Frames
- Select “New Frame Left” on Frames toolbar
- You can change the size of the different frames by
dragging the divider one way or another.
- Make insertion point be in the left frame, then Save As
index (.htm if showing file name extensions) as a filtered web page in the
folder that you created (File > Save AS > )
- Put a little text in each frame so you can test things. I
recommend against putting any background on the frames, because you will
need to upload a folder with the graphics to make the background appear.
- Save – this will create a third file (name chosen by Bill
Gates based on content in the left frame)
- Test out your files “locally” – on your PC – I recommend finding
the files you have created and double clicking on them (the index file
should display the whole page with both frames, the first file you created
will display the right frame contents (only). The file created
automatically will display the left frame contents (only)). The Web page
Preview within Word doesn’t work as well.
- Create additional Word web page documents which will be
brought into your right hand frame when user chooses. This could include
sections from your paper. Do this separately from your frames document.
- You can cut and paste text from your paper into new www
page documents
- Save these As filtered web page in the folder you are
storing everything in.
- In the left hand frame of your main page, enter text for
links, then for each:
- Select the text
- Right Click on selected text and choose “Hyperlink”
- Find the file and select it. Check that the address is
automatically brought into the “Address” textbox
- Click on the “Target Frame” button
- Click on right frame in dialog box
- Click on “OK” Button
- Click on “Ok” button – The document should now have a
link on the selected text.
- Save
- At this point, I would test my files again – double
click on the index file to open up Internet Explorer, and check that the
links result in the pages being brought into the right frame
- At this point, you have a choice of uploading your files
and testing live, or enhancing your pages first. Since many people may
only want to ftp files once, you might choose to enhance pages first and
ftp later. However, plan on doing the ftp before the last minute, in case
of problems.
- Note: if at any point you want to change a .htm file that
has been closed, in order to bring up Word (instead of Internet Explorer),
Right Click on the file, and choose “Open With” then “Microsoft Office Word”
- In enhancing your files, you probably want to add links,
and possibly graphics.
- To add links to pages that aren’t yours, insert
hyperlinks like above, except use the “Browse the Web” button (earth with
a magnifying glass icon). You should certainly provide links to any
www pages that you used as sources.
- To add pictures, do as normal in Word (Insert >
Picture > From File> etc). However, you will note that when you
Save, a new folder is automatically created (named yourfilename_files)
and it contains the image(s) with very generic names (e.g.
image0001.jpg). This folder will have to be uploaded with your other
files in order for that graphic to appear on your page.
- Make sure you Save
Instructions for Uploading Files to Publish on the Web
- Start up WS_FTP_32 (Look under F:/ WS_FTP, find the
executable icon). It seems that it is not on the Start menu for some
reason
- Type in your username and password (your network username
and password)
- Click on the “Ok” Button
- Find you files in the left hand panel. This is where
having them all in one folder will come in handy.
- Find the appropriate place to put the files on the Alpha
in the right hand panel (inside public_html)
- Select the files to be uploaded in the left panel. Include
the folder(s) for graphics, but that may not work, you may need to do
those separately
- Select the right-pointing arrow between the left and right
panels. Files should be transferred (look for any red messages at bottom
left for any problems.) The connection will not stay active for long, so
if you test your files and there is a problem, it is possible you will
have to reconnect before re-uploading.
- Check that all of the files in any folders were
successfully uploaded. If not, navigate in both the left and right panels
so the files are going from and to the right folder, and upload again.
- Test your pages live – specify a URL of www.lasalle.edu/~yourusername/index.htm
