My math teacher in whatever grade (8th? 10th?) would always tell us to
always remember the quadratic formula, “in case somebody on the street stopped
us and asked what it was”.[1]
Nonetheless, I had to look it up for this exercise[2].
The idea is that if you want to find the roots of a quadratic polynomial with
coefficients a, b, and c (in that order), then the formula is:
Table 1: Some Coefficients with Roots
a |
b |
c |
Root
1 |
Root
2 |
1 |
2 |
1 |
-1 |
-1 |
2 |

-4 |

-4.45 |
Let’s now look at how this pans out with real
numbers. Table 1 illustrates with a few values. Interestingly enough, the WWW
site author for the page on which I found this had the following comment: Teachers,
do not have mercy on students who do not remember the quadratic formula. In
bold print and everything! (not just italics). Several comments are in
order:
·
It
is probably just my middle age memory that caused me to forget.
·
<YOUR
NAME HERE> still remembers the quadratic formula.
·
The
WWW page derives the formula, in case you are interested.
Well that’s enough for now, some people don’t type
very fast!
