Assignment 7 – Microsoft Excel – Creating Simple Spreadsheet -  10 points

Assigned: 03/31/03

Due: 04/04/03 at the start of class  (time in class will only be equivalent to one class period)

                Remember: late penalties are heavy

Assignment:

Imagine that you have been asked to create the spreadsheet and graph shown on the attached pages. The task includes calculations involving the composition of different organisms. No prior knowledge is needed, all information about the task is provided here. Note that formulas are required in all cells except for the basic info that cannot be calculated. Follow instructions carefully. Print the spreadsheet and the graph.

Turn In:

1)       Print out of spreadsheet

2)       Print out of the graph

3)       Disk

Details:

1)       The spreadsheet should be formatted as shown, including title, headings, totals, etc. Auto Format using “Simple” style will do a fair amount of the work for you. WARNING:  if you are going to use Auto Format, use it before you do any formatting work, because it will change formats as it so desires, removing formatting you have done. HINT: I would save putting in the source until after Auto Formatting, or not include it in the range being auto formatted.  The title should be centered across all of the columns (using Merge and Center if auto format doesn’t do it successfully), and be Bold, and two lines in one cell. The column and other headings at the top should be bold.  Border lines should be included as shown (auto format will do some, format painter or format menu can be used for others).

2)       Type your actual name where the example says “YOUR NAME HERE”.

3)       The base composition for nucleotides A, T, G, and C for each of the organisms need to be typed in as numbers.

4)       The ratio of A+T / G + C must be calculated using formulas.

5)       Total number of A, T, G, and C (under “Check Work”)  must be calculated using formulas.

6)       The Source is a bit of a pain to get to work well formatting-wise. Do your best to make it look ok (I used 3 cells).

7)       The graph is a line “Graph with Markers”

8)       Put the graph on a separate sheet than the data

9)       You need to add titles to the graph, X-axis , and Y-axis.

10)    Make sure that the whole spreadsheet prints on one page. Adjust under Page Setup if necessary
