Using Microsoft
FrontPage
Background
- Should be on Start Button under Microsoft Office
- May not be on your computer (not a core part of office)
- Easiest way to create www pages using FrontPage is to use
the Personal Web Site template, then modify
- Other templates include:
- One page web site
- Customer support
- Empty
- Project
- SharePoint Team
- There are also a variety of Wizards:
- Corporate Presence
- Database Interface
- Discussion Web
- Import Web Site
Getting Started
- From New button on toolbar (or Getting Started Task Bar),
get the Web Site Templates dialog box up and choose desired template
(Personal Web Site for many uses). And on right side, browse for the
location where you want to put things (while you are working on them).
When you choose OK, hundreds of files will be created for you. A folder
list will show on the left of the screen. The main pane will by default
show folders view (so at this point you have both panes showing the same
things).
- The navigation view can be shown using the View menu or
using buttons at the bottom of the document window – this shows the
structure of the WWW site. In this view it is easy to delete pages (Right
Click on the page and choose Delete – then choose whether to delete from
the navigation structure (still exists as a file) or delete from the www
site)
- Some of the folders are internal to FrontPage and can be
ignored - _fpclass, _overlay, and _themes
- images can be used to store images that you use
- _private can be used to put files such as images that you
want to display but don’t want viewers to be able to copy it
- photogallery is used by FrontPage to store thumbnails
- You can choose from one of many themes to create
consistent look at layout to your pages
- Format>Theme
- Choose theme and apply as default (so all pages are the
same)
- You can open a page for editing by double-clicking on it
(e.g. index.htm is the main page for a site). You can work with multiple
pages – tabs across the top allow you to move among them.
- As you work with the page (WYSIWYG), FrontPage is
generating the HTML for the page.
Modifying Pages Created by Templates
- Plain text can be just selected and typed over to replace
it (some placeholders are designed to tell you what to do, and would seem
weird on an actual page)
- Selected text can be formatted. For example, it can be
changed from “normal” to a heading, such as “heading 2” via the style box.
It can be bolded, italicized, aligned left, center, or right, etc as you
would in Word.
- Hyperlinks are changed much as in Word – Right Click
anywhere on the link, Choose Hyperlink Properties. Then in the dialog box,
specify the displayed text (up top) and the URL (www address) (down
bottom).
- You can also click on the world icon to go look on the
web for the page to link.
- For a reference within the site, can choose a file via
####
- To allow viewers to easily e-mail you, in the hyperlink
Properties dialog box switch to e-mail address (at bottom left), and
specify the text to display on the page, the e-mail address to mail to,
and even the subject for the message.
- Pages also can contain Web Components. You can tell
something is a Web Component by hovering over it – the pointer changes to
look like a hand holding a written list. Some types of components include:
- Hit counter – won’t work on La Salle’s WWW server
- Photo gallery
- Link bar
- Page banner
- To change page banner, Right-Click the page banner, choose
Page Banner Properties; change the text in the dialog box
- Save work using File>Save – always save before
previewing
- Preview work –click Preview button at bottom of the
document window
- You can print the page (don’t know why) – File>Print
(while in Design View)
- You can see the HTML generated (don’t know why – and
Microsoft generates the least readable HTML anywhere) – Choose “Code” View
at bottom of the document window
Adding A Page to The Site
- In Navigation view on the Web Site tab, Right Click on
“parent” page, and Choose New> Page.
- Select the icon being created to change the name (as in
changing file names).
- This page will be added automatically to the Link Bars
(for navigation) – other methods of adding pages may not have this
benefit.
- However, this page will be blank except for background – a
lot of work to create.
Copying A Page
- In Navigation view on the Web Site tab, Right Click on
page to be copied, and Choose Copy.
- Then, Right Click on “parent” page, and choose Paste
- Select the icon being created to change the name (as in
changing file names).
- This page will be added automatically to the Link Bars
(for navigation)
- You probably want to also rename the file – In Folders View
on the Web Site tab, rename the file (any of the ways you would rename a
file in Explorer)
Designing a Page From Scratch
- Layout the page with tables. On blank page, use Insert
Table button on Toolbar or Table>Insert>Table on menus
- Insert Table button looks like a table – on drop down,
specify the number of rows and columns by cell you click (max 4 rows and
5 columns)
- From the menu, you get a dialog box with large numbers of
options including number of rows and columns.
- Extra rows can be added as in Word – by hitting TAB when
in the last cell in the last row. You can also use the Table>Insert
menu
- Cells can be merged, by selecting the cells to be merged
and Right Clicking and choosing Merge Cells
- Cells can also be split.
- Cell borders can be moved. Hover over the edge of the
cell, the cursor will change to arrows. Click and drag to new position.
Pages can have a lot of flexibility by merging and splitting cells and
moving borders.
- Many properties of tables and cells can be adjusted to
taste. For example, Table Border Size = 0 means the borders are not seen.
- Items can be entered into cells on the page. E.g.
Insert>Picture>From File
- Cell sizes will adjust to the size of the picture
- Picture properties can be adjusted – Right Click then
choose Picture Properties, then in the dialog box, adjust the size (make
sure that “Keep Aspect Ratio” is checked so that the picture doesn’t get
stretched)
- Horizontal Lines can be added. Insert > Horizontal Line
(and properties of it can be set via Right Click > Horizontal Line
Properties
Photo Gallery Web Component
- Makes displaying groups of photos easy. Displays thumbnail
images (small version that is a hyperlink to a larger version of the same
picture). To insert:
- Position cursor where you want the photo gallery to be
- Insert> Web Component
- In left pane of dialog box, choose Photo Gallery
- In the right pane, choose the style you want
- Choose Finish button
- In the dialog box that comes up, hit the Add button, choose
Pictures from Files, find the file(s), Choose Open. Choose Ok. Repeat as
desired.
- A selected photo can have properties set – such as
thumbnail size, caption, description, ...
- The Edit button allows some editing of the image
- (you can also get to the dialog box using Photo Gallery
Properties)
Link Bars Web Component
- Makes navigation easy. To insert:
- Position cursor where you want the link bar to be
- Insert>Navigation
- In the left pane of the dialog box, choose Link Bars
- In the right pane, choose the navigation scheme (
- Bar with custom links – creates bar with any mix of
links – internal and external to the site
- Choose Next
- Choose style, then Next button
- Choose horizontal or vertical orientation, then choose
Finish
- Link Bar Properties dialog box will appear
- Under General Tab, choose Add Link button
- Normal dialog box for hyperlinks appears. Specify text
to be displayed and UR L (www address)
- Repeat Add Link process as desired.
- Bar Based on Navigation Scheme – creates bar using the
structure of the WWW site
- Choose Next
- Choose style, then Next button
- Choose horizontal or vertical orientation, then choose
Finish
- Link Bar Properties dialog box will appear – different
than custom links version
- Under General Tab, select which pages to include (e.g.
Same level to show links to pages on the same level structure as the
current page. You can also check the check box to indicate to show the
home page too)
- Choose Ok
- Bar with Back and Next Links – creates bar for
processing in sequence – only can go to previous or next page
- Choose Next
- Choose style, then Next button
- Choose horizontal or vertical orientation, then choose
Finish
- The Link Bar Properties dialog box will appear – as
with Custom link bar approach
- Under the General Tab, choose Create New to create a
new link bar. Specify a name. Then start adding pages with the Add Link
button
- Normal dialog box for hyperlinks appears. For this type
of link bar, you probably want to use local files. Select the file name
from the list
- Repeat Add Link process as desired.
- To make sense, this link bar should be added to each of
the pages involved.
- This approach is really contrary to the idea of
hypertext – controlling the reader so that they process material
sequentially as in traditional media (e.g. books)

Publishing WWW Site Without FrontPage’s Help
- Start up WS_FTP_32 (Look under F:/ WS_FTP, find the
executable icon). It seems that it is not on the Start menu for some
reason
- Type in your username and password (your network username
and password)
- Click on the “Ok” Button
- Find you files in the left hand panel. This is where
having them all in one folder will come in handy.
- Find the appropriate place to put the files on the Alpha
in the right hand panel (inside public_html)
- Select the files to be uploaded in the left panel. Include
the folder(s) for graphics, but that may not work, you may need to do
those separately
- Select the right-pointing arrow between the left and right
panels. Files should be transferred (look for any red messages at bottom
left for any problems.) The connection will not stay active for long, so
if you test your files and there is a problem, it is possible you will
have to reconnect before re-uploading.
- Check that all of the files in any folders were
successfully uploaded. If not, navigate in both the left and right panels
so the files are going from and to the right folder, and upload again.
- Test your pages live – specify a URL of www.lasalle.edu/~yourusername/index.htm
