Welcome to CSC 470 - Special Topics: data Mining.

This course is a special topics course, which means that it is not a regularly offered course. It is about data mining, which is the process of extracting useful information from masses of data. It is related to data warehousing in that the collection of and cleaning of data, as in a data warehousing effort, supports data mining. It is related to machine learning in that most of the most popular/useful methods of data mining are machine learning methods. Machine learning is the study of computer programs that develop capabilities that they are not explicitly programmed for.

In Fall 2005, there are two sections of this course (day and evening). For aspects of the course in which things might be different between day and evening (syllabus, assignments), be sure to look carefully for which is which.
