CIS 624 Fall 2005 Assignment
4 – Cognos Transformer – Creating a Data Cube
Due: Start of Class on 12/05/05
Task:
Using Cognos Transformer and the data in for MultidimensionalForCognosQuery.txt
or alternatively in the query inside the OceanCityBigStarSchema.mdb Microsoft
Access Database (both available on CD-R; they are too huge to e-mail or post to
the www), create a data cube with contents as shown on my WWW page (OceanCity
under Cognos at http://www.lasalle.edu/~redmond/teach/624/resources.htm)
- The data source type is “Delimited-field text with column
headings” if using the text file, or “Access Query” if using the Microsoft
Access file.
- The measures should include: numRentals, AskingPrice and AmountPaid.
- The Renter State hierarchy should also include county, city
and zip.
- The Renting Agent Company hierarchy should also include Office
and renting Agent (last name) (Please note that there is a difference
between the renting agent – who booked the rental, and the Renter’s Agent
(some renters have an agent they work with, who MAY become the renting
agent. Also note that the house will probably have a listing agent. Both
the renting agent and the listing agent get commissions)
- In Cognos, the key attributes in a dimension that do not
fit in a hierarchy are built as separate dimensions. From the House table,
we are interested in:
- Number of bedrooms
- Number of bathrooms
- Sleeps
- Type (Condo / Townhouse / Duplex / Single )
- Blocks from Beach
- Ocean (front / view / non )
- A/C
- Smoking
- Condition (New / Very Good / Good / Poor )
- The Listing Agent Company hierarchy is obtained from House
and should also include Office and listing Agent (last name)
- The Owner State hierarchy is obtained from House and
should also include county, city and zip.
- The Year hierarchy should also include Month and Week
- The Season hierarchy is obtained from weeks, and has no

Check your work. Turn in the model file and the data cube
file. This will be too big for floppy, you will need a CD.
