Franz Joseph Haydn 1732-1809

Born into a poor family
Put himself through school by singing as a choirboy at St. Stephen's Cathedral in Vienna.
When his voice changed, he was dismissed from school.
Made a living in Vienna as a freelance musician.
Eventually, his music impressed the Esterhazy family, and he went to work for them. He remained there for 30 years.
Wrote symphonies, operas, chamber music, etc. Whatever was called for by the prince.
The court orchestra was 2 oboes, 2 horns, and strings. A modest orchestra.
His early symphonic works were in 3 movements, but eventually, he adopted a consistent 4-movement plan.
Sonata Cycle. Fast, Slow, Dance like, Fast.
He was known for his sense of humor. Included humor in many of his works.
"Farewell Symphony", each of the orchestra's members are directed to pack up and leave during the final movement.
Sending a message to the prince to return home from their summer palace!

Second movement is the slow movement; the audience liked to doze off during the slow movement. Surprise is there to wake them. Haydn't sense of humor comes out in the music!
