MUS-150 - Art Of Listening
Listening Assignment No. 2
Due Tuesday, 9/29/15


Compile a list of "Top 5 selections of music" from 3 close friends/family.
Try to choose folks with a difference in musical taste.
Remember "All music has value to someone".
Listen to TWO of each person's favorite selections (a 30-second sample of each is adequate).
Write down words to describe your immediate reaction to the sounds you are hearing. Reflect on the musical significance that each work might have to any person (not just that person in particular).
Identify the elements of music that are immediately evident to you on a first listen.
This should be a couple of words only, not a paragraph on each.
I'm not expecting your command of the terminology to be at the expert level just yet!

THEN

Compile a list of your "Top 5 selections of music".
Listen to your favorite selections (listen a bit longer than 30 seconds to these works).
Reflect on the musical significance that each work has to you, and identify anything that appeals to you in the selection.
Identify the elements of music that are evident to you.

Do not put the music on in the background while you are writing, as it then becomes simply Muzak, and you are not getting the full effect of the assignment. I want you to be Listening, not just Hearing!
