Listening Assignment No. 4

Due Wednesday, March 28, 2012.

Study the terms on Form from last class.
Go back to your "Top 5 Selections of Music" that you have been listening to for the past few Listening Assignments. Listen to it several times (at least 3), and write a description (no more than 2 pages) of how the elements of music are used to create a form. Discuss the form as a grouping of sections, but also use musical terminology to incorporate the elements, i.e., the work contained a crescendo at the end of one section, and the resulting climax coincided with the start of the next section...

You can work from the general to the specific; i.e., For form, try to hear phrases that form sections. Can you count how many "measures" each phrase or section is? Repetition, variation, or contrast. Is there anything "setting up" the arrival of new sections (like a drum fill with cymbal crash?).

As in the previous listening assignments, I do not suggest putting the music on in the background while you are writing, as it then becomes simply Muzak, and you are not getting the full effect of the assignment. Remember, I want you to be Listening, not just Hearing!
