MARY JEANNE (Jeannie) WELSH, Ph.D., CPA

I am originally from New Orleans, Louisiana and I received my B.A. and Ph.D. from the "other" LSU (Louisiana State University). My MBA is from the University of New Orleans. I have been on the faculty at La Salle University since 1991, after five years on the faculty at Temple University. I have been the Chair of the Accounting Department at La Salle since 2000.

My primary interest is in financial accounting and I teach intermediate financial accounting at the undergraduate and graduate level. I wrote the Instructor’s Manual to accompany the first three editions of the text we use in the course, Intermediate Accounting by Hartman, Harper, Knoblett and Reckers.

My dissertation topic, way back when, was on pension reporting, and much of my subsequent research has been in the areas of pension and postretirement benefits. My other major research area is on the impact of gender and family issues on women’s professional lives. Related to my interest in gender issues, I have been active in the American Accounting Association's Gender Issues in Accounting Section, serving as Chair (1997-1998), Membership Director, Research Director, and a regional coordinator.

I live in the Fairmount section of Philadelphia with my husband and son. Even though we've been in Philadelphia since 1986, I still like to cook New Orleans style. You can check out some recipes on my Web page. I love baseball and I always score the games when I go (that's the accountant's way).
