ACCOUNTING 202

Classroom Policies

Attendance and participation:

Attend every class and please be on time. Turn off cell phones and pagers and do not leave class until the end of the period. (If you have special circumstances, please speak to me before class.)

NO LATE WORK WILL BE ACCEPTED. If you miss class on a day that an assignment must be turned in, make arrangements to get the assignment to me before class. Assignments can be e-mailed, but I prefer hardcopy.

Understanding accounting implies that you can apply concepts to unfamiliar situations and explain what you have done to others. As part of participation points, you will be responsible for one in-class problem demonstration worth 10 points. Your grade on the demonstration will be based on the clarity of your explanation, not on whether you can derive the correct answer. You will receive your problem assignment in advance. Prepare your solution on a spreadsheet for presentation using the classroom projection system. Some additional guidelines are included on the last page of the syllabus.

You will be assigned to an in-class discussion group. At the end of the semester, I will ask you to evaluate your contribution to the group and the contributions of your fellow group members. Five of your participation points will come from that evaluation.
Homework assignments:

You are responsible for working assigned problems and exercises. If you don't work the problems in advance, you will have to assume that the student presenting the problem is giving you the correct solution. This is a risky assumption. Multiple Choice review problems will be discussed in class. I do not plan to pick up solutions, but if the class does not appear to have prepared the answers in advance, I will collect answers and grade the assignment as a quiz (each question worth 1 point).

Exams:

Exams provide an opportunity for you to demonstrate your command of the material. Exams consist of multiple choice questions, problems, and short discussion questions. You will need to study the text thoroughly to prepare for an exam. Merely reviewing old homework problems will not be sufficient preparation. (Calculators that are part of a cell phone or PDA/Hand Held such as Pilot or Visor cannot be used on exams.) You cannot leave class and return during an exam so plan accordingly.

Exam dates are noted on the syllabus so that you can develop a study schedule that will give you sufficient time to prepare for each exam. This will allow you to handle the last-minute catastrophes that invariably occur before an exam without hurting your performance. ALL MAKE-UP EXAMS WILL BE GIVEN DURING THE FINAL WEEK OF CLASSES. If an emergency arises, you must contact me before the exam is given in order to qualify for a make-up exam. There are no exceptions to this requirement! You must also provide appropriate written documentation (i.e. a doctor's note, accident report or obituary) as a follow-up to the initial phone call. (Please note: A death in the family should be reported to Susan Mudrick, the Assistant Dean. She will notify your instructors.)

Weather closing:

The La Salle snow number for day classes is 105 (or call 215- 951-1910). As long as SEPTA is running, I should be in class. In the event of an official snow closing, on our first class back, we will cover the material assigned for the missed class.
