Professionalism

Just as if you were “On the job” I expect you to attend class. Roll will be taken at each class meeting in Zoom. For any absence to be excused you must contact me beforehand and provide documentation of your explanation or have a friend do so if you are unable. Given normal extenuating circumstances, you will be allowed a total of four unexcused class absences. If you have other extenuating circumstances related to being off-campus, let me know (email is best). Excessive unexcused absences, or excessive excused absences may lower your final grade.
Assignments, tests or quizzes missed due to excused absences can be made up. Those missed due to unexcused absences (no advance notice) cannot. You have the reponsibility to read and follow the La Salle policy on Academic Integrity. This includes forbidding of plagiarism defined here as knowingly presenting as one’s own the work or ideas of another, and self-plagiarism, presenting as original work that was completed for another college course. Normal penalties for plagiarism include a zero grade for the test or assignment, with a failing grade for the course a possibility. We'll also take a look at my presentation on integrity as it relates to Digital Arts.

Assignments

There will be one final exam and a short quiz. This is a technical subject area that requires you to be conversant with extensive terminology, principles, and concepts, so the quiz and exam are impportant to show that you are coversant with the subject. They will include material from class including handouts, readings from the Web, and the primary text:

Also recommended is a home subscription to Adobe Creative Cloud (CC) if you plan on doing more work in web and online. Student subscriptions are available for $19.99 per month. Note that other historical references for this course include Jakob Nielsen’s Designing Web Usability and Steve Krug’s Don’t Make Me Think. A Common Sense Approach to Web Usability.

Other assignments include hand-coded pages and components, site-of-the-day presentations, a content-based or personal portfolio website, and revisions and extensions to that website (notably a working form page).

The site-of-the-day (SOD) presentations will be assigned to you in order alphabetically by last name. You will probably be asked to present twice. For each presentation, I will assign you a topic (e.g. basic HTML) and you will teach the class from a website that you select. You need to email me the link at the latest by the morning of class so that I can put the link up on this site. Your presentation should be about 5-10 minutes; make notes, and teach us something, don't just say "This is a good site about HTML."

Weights will be assigned as follows:

Website 30%
Revised site 20%

Quiz 5%
Final exam 15%
Participation 5%

Grade Assignment: A = 94 and above; A- = 90-93; B+ = 87-89; B = 84-86; B- = 80-83; C+ = 77-79; C = 74-76; C- = 70-73; D+ = 67-69; D = 60-66; F = below 60.
