If your alpha password was reset, use Filezilla to check on your public_html directory. Today’s topic is searching, and sources. Here are some links that add to the readings. We’ll look at these in class:
Web browsing, search engines, directories:
  • An archive of old and new browsers you can test at evolt.org
  • A page to get stats on use of browsers, resolutions, platforms, search engines, etc. at StatCounter.
  • Search engines and how to use them from SearchEngineWatch, the site about search engines.
  • A useful series of articles on search engines from About.com
  • Maybe the future of search. Creates custom pages on the topic: Addict-o-matic
  • Be sure from class or readings that you understand:
    1. Boolean searches (AND, OR, NOT, +/-)
    2. Phrase or string searching ("two words" {two words})
    3. Proximity searches (word1 w/5 word2)
    4. Wild cards and truncation (wom?n and develop*)
    5. Synonym searching (new on Google: food ~facts)
    To get you started on HTML and the Handcoded pages assignment (Thursday), we’ll start a basic HTML page today. And here are PowerPoint slides from the text on structure (Chapter 1).
