Todays topic is searching, and sources.
Here are some links that add to the readings. Well look at these in class:
Web browsing, search engines, directories:
- An archive of old and new browsers you can test at evolt.org
- A page to get stats on use of browsers, resolutions, platforms, search engines, etc. at StatCounter.
- Search engines and how to use them from SearchEngineWatch, the site about search engines.
- A useful series of articles on search engines from
About.com
- Maybe the future of search. Creates custom pages on the topic: Addict-o-matic
- Be sure from class or readings that you understand:
- Boolean searches (AND, OR, NOT, +/-)
- Phrase or string searching ("two words" {two words})
- Proximity searches (word1 w/5 word2)
- Wild cards and truncation (wom?n and develop*)
- Synonym searching (new on Google: food ~facts)
To get you started on HTML and the Handcoded pages assignment (Thursday), well start a basic HTML page today. And here are PowerPoint slides from the text on structure (Chapter 1).
