THE ARBORETUM PROJECT
LA SALLE UNIVERSITY

Growing on La Salle's campus are at least 200 species of woody plants. We are still in the process of identifying our woody plants. The CHECKLIST is updated on a regular basis. In an effort to make our holdings accessible we have begun the process of labeling. Presently about 30 trees (mostly on main campus) have labels that include the scientific as well as the common name.

Each year we add new species. Our most recent additions include Acer rubrum 'Red Sunset' (Red Maple), Asimina triloba (Pawpaw), Buddleia davidii 'Empire Blue' (Butterfly Bush), Buddleia davidii 'Pink Delight', Buddleia davidii 'Nanho Blue', Buddleia davidii 'Royal Red', Buddleia davidii 'White Profusion', Buddleia davidii 'White', Buddleia davidii var. nanhoensis 'Petite Plum', Cedrus deodara 'Kashmir' (Deodar Cedar), Davidia involucrata (Dove Tree), Diospyros virginiana (Persimmon), Eleagnus x ebbingii, Franklinia altamaha (Franklinia), Fraxinus pennsylvanica (Green Ash), Sassafras albidum (Sassafras), Sciadopitys verticillata (Japanese Umbrella-pine) and Sequoiadendron giganteum (Giant Sequoia, Big Tree, Giant Redwood).

Several of these are true 'specimen' plants and will be noticed instantly . This is especially true of the Sciadopitys, Cedrus and Franklinia.

Consider visiting the campus sometime. There are some very impressive areas and from early March to early November there is plenty to see. Even the winter months can be interesting. The portion of the campus which contains the Peale house is always a joy to wander. Snowdrops, squill and daffodils start the year. Wisteria vines near the house flower in late April to early May. Kwanzan cherries brighten up the area near the Japanese Tea Ceremony House around the same time. Rhododendrons add their impressive blooms in abundance in late May and early June. In late June and early July we are treated to a nice display from several stands of the bottlebrush buckeye. From mid-summer on Franklinia, with its camellia-like flowers, is in bloom. Many other treats await the casual wanderer.
