Newsletter Project

4/25/19

You will be creating a four-page newsletter as your final InDesign project, which is due at the final exam (May 7, 2 p.m.). Try to print it front-to-back on a single sheet of paper, as with the brochure (but it's trickier here).

OPTION A: Create a 8 1/2" by 11" newsletter from copy that I supply (with errors, some real, some introduced). You will still need to locate graphics, such as mug shots, write headlines, make story selections, and produce other non-story content such as a masthead, flag/nameplate, and perhaps a mailer or a calendar. You should have a designed nameplate, and maybe a mailer—the masthead and calendar are less crucial. There needs to be one feature story on the front page that jumps inside, most obviously the president's message. You also need a folio line (page numbers plus name/date of publication) and cutlines/captions for all photos.

This newsletter is for the Mass Communication & Society division of AEJMC. It goes to members, so there is no need to explain AEJMC. The division uses MC&S as an abbreviated name. I used a simple type logo with some shadows and rules and the name MC&S News, although you could decide on a new title (you're the editor).

What you have

  • a lead story that you must use on page 1 and jump inside.
  • a list of officers that you must use
  • a story and “ballot” for a division vote that you must include
  • two other stories that you can use or not: story1 , story2
  • a logo for the upcoming convention that you must use

All stories need a basic edit, and formatting needs work (line returns, indents, tabs, spacing) because they came in from various sources including e-mail.

OPTION B:

Make your own. This newsletter will need to have real copy, but you can get than from any appropriate source. For example, if you choose an organization, or department at La Salle, you should get brochures, or Web site copy that you can use. You might have to write some copy. The important thing is that your copy is real, and that you copyfit it to the design.

There needs to be one feature story on the front page that jumps inside. The back page bottom half could be reserved for a mailer, and the top half could be a list of officers or schedule, so there will be three “real” pages to design. You should consider a schedule of events in calendar form, perhaps a featured employee, and so on.

If you choose this, ask me about your topic, and start looking for design ideas (and see Robin Williams, especially pages 129–132).

For inspiration (or critique) here are some PDF newsletters I get: Entertainment Studies, MC&S 1 and 2 and 2019, Visual Communication (all AAEJMC); ICA, and ILEEP (La Salle). This format (or posting on issuu.com etc.) is likely to be around for a while. I'll also pass around some examples.
