Film as Art
Film as Art is a survey course designed for all students as an introduction to film as a medium, an industry, and an art form. The subject matter for the course includes: the origin of film, its development of techniques, styles, and genres; the emergence of the classical Hollywood Film, and the outstanding films and filmmakers of our time. The later weeks of the course will concentrate on critical evaluation of the contributions made to the art of film by some of the medium's finest directors. At the end of the course, you will:
- understand the origin and technological development of film,
- command the basic terminology of filmmaking,
- recognize the thematic impact of various filming and editing techniques,
- be able to identify important eras, aesthetic movements, genres, classic films, and outstanding directors in the history of the medium,
- relate film to other arts: music, painting, literature, and drama.
This site will serve as a supplement to the course syllabus as well as a source for some fun and entertainment. Enjoy the show.
