The sport Lacrosse, according to World Lacrosse ,"began as a native American Indian contest played by the warriors for training, recreation and religious reasons, has developed over the years into the interscholastic, professional, an international sport of lacrosse.

The History of Lacrosse

Lacrosse, which is believed to have originated in Canada in the 17th century, has become extremely popular in the 21st century. This sport has become most popular in the United States as the sport is now offered as a team at hundreds of different colleges. According to Wikipedia, there are currently 116 Division 1 Women's Lacrosse teams and 73 Men's Division 1 Lacrosse Teams. Not all colleges offer both Men's and Women's teams. There are also Divison 2 and Division 3 teams offered at Division 2 and 3 schools. Lacrosse is similar to other sports in different aspects. For example, it is similar to soccer because the positions consist of attack, midfield, defense, and goalkeeper. However, soccer has more specific positions such as defensive midfielder, right midfielder, offensive midfielder, etc. Lacrosse is also similar to field hockey because the sport is based around a stick and a ball. Also, the ultimate goal is to score the ball in the goal. This is done in lacrosse by throwing the ball, while in field hockey it is done by hitting the ball, and in soccer by kicking the ball.

When Lacrosse Became a Professional Sport

According to Wikipedia, Major League Lacrosse, which is defined as a men's field lacrose league consisting of six active teams in the United States, had it's inaugural season in 2001. The season runs from May to September and each team plays 16 regular-season games and then four of the teams make it to playoffs where they compete for the Steinfield Trophy. The annual salary for MLL players is between $10,000-25,000, which forces them to have another job. In 2019, the Chesapeake Bayhawks won the championship against the Denver Outlaws, beating them by one point. The final score was 10-9.
