The purpose of this section is to provide a technical overview of WAP 2.0 and explain how it builds on the work in WAP 1.x and how it adds value beyond the regular TCP and HTTP protocols. WAP 1.x and WAP 2.0 are a set of standards that have been created with the specific needs of mobile operators in mind to support innovative application and services in the browsing paradigm as well as messaging paradigm (MMS).

The WAP specifications cover several areas that need to be addressed in the wireless environment such as:

· Protocol Stack to support wireless networks
· Markup Language
· Push
· Provisioning
· User Agent Profiling
· Telephony and Wireless Data integration on the device (WTA)

Whereas the WAP 1.x specifications were created with the specific constraints of 2G networks and wireless devices in mind, the WAP 2 specifications achieve convergence towards standard Internet protocols while retaining wireless specific focus. In short WAP 2.0 is TCP, HTTP and TLS with wireless optimizations (that are optional). In addition WAP 2.0 provides an architecture that leverages the uniqueness of the wireless network, addresses wireless carriers business issues and provides a framework that can address all wireless devices, such as mobile phones, PDA's and all TCP/HTTP devices.
