Notes

Current notes

MIDI: Musical Instrument Digital Interface.
1. a language that musical instruments use to communicate,
2. the hardware components of this communication (ports, cables, etc.),
3. actual computer files that are created and modified from this protocol.

Voices
SATB
From highest to lowest: - Soprano (high female), Contralto (Alto) (low female), Tenor (high male), Bass (low male); most common are Mezzo-Soprano (medium female) and Baritone (medium male)
Each person has the voice type that they have been given. Training, lessons, exercises, etc. can help strengthen a voice, polish the tone, have more control, etc., but can not turn an Alto into a Soprano.

Assignments

Listening Assignment No. 1: Due Tues., January 20, 2015 - Music journal for one day, active vs. passive listening.
Listening Assignment No. 2: Due Tues., February 5, 2015 - Top 5 selections of music from 3 other people + your own Top 5.
Listening Assignment No. 3: Due Thurs., February 19, 2015 - In your opinion, what is the Single Greatest Piece of Music Ever Written? Discuss why it's your choice, and its musical characteristics (melody, harmony, phrases, cadences, consonance/dissonance, beat, tempo, rhythms, timbre, lyrics, associations, emotions, etc.)
Listening Assignment No. 4: Due Thurs., March 19, 2015 - your top 5 selections of music. For each, is it classic or romantic?
Listening Assignment No. 5: Due Thurs., April 7, 2015 - your top 5 selections of music. For each, is it absolute or program?
Listening Assignment No. 6: Due Thurs., April 30, 2015 - Spend some time listening to your favorite song - active listening - to describe how your hearing of it has changed from the beginning of the semester. Use terms from class wherever applicable, and concentrate on the aspects that are apparent to you. You might notice more now in the way of timbre, or harmony; maybe you've noticed a section that reappears to unify the form; or now can count the beats; or listen from a classic/absolute or romantic/program approach. However you discuss it, I'm sure that your listening skills have improved greatly over the semester!
